The Synergistic effect between the homeopathics in this complex makes this remedy suitable for a wide range of coughs.
Note: This cough remedy is very broad spectrum in it’s application Any animal suspected of having a cough associated with heart disease or that persists after a period of treatment should contact a veterinarian. This remedy can mask heart disease temporarily even in the hands of a veterinary surgeon if a proper examination is not first carried out
DOSE: Dogs/Cats under 20 lbs/10 kg, 5 drops; 20-100 lbs/10-50 kg, 10 drops; over 100 lbs/50 kg, 15 drops. In acute cases the doses can be given every 15 minutes for the first hour, every 30 minutes in the second hour, once in the third hour, then reducing to 1 dose 3 times daily. For cases that are not acute one dose 3 times daily. Once a response is seen the administration should either be reduced until symptoms reappear or ceased until symptoms reappear. If any reduction in dose or frequency leads to immediate reoccurrence of symptoms then medication should be continued with a reduction being done every 12-21 days to check that the medication is providing control rather than relief of symptoms.
DOSE: Small mammals, exotics and birds: 3 drops in drinking water daily. For severe cases a drop can be diluted in lml of water or other oral rehydration fluid and given to the patient orally taking care to avoid aspiration of the fluid into the respiratory tract by the patient. This can be repeated as for cats and dogs where the case is acute, but with a volume of fluid suited to the patient.
ADMINISTRATION: Optimally the liquid preparation should be dropped directly into the mucous membrane of the mouth including lips; ideally in dogs by pulling out the labial pouch and in cats by raising the head until the mouth opens. Where an animal finds this distressful or an owner is unable to comply, the medication can be put in the food, water or milk. Where animals are sensitive to the odor of the alcohol preservative a 10-20 minute period should be allowed for it to dilute and evaporate before the liquid or food is presented to the patient. Occasionally animals will shake their head as a response to the alcohol preservative, cats may salivate
excessively and in these cases presenting it in food, water or milk words.
ADVERSE EFFECTS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS: None known other than reversible effect of over dosage. Over dosage will result in a return of symptoms after the symptoms have initially disappeared. Where either an increase or a return of symptoms occurs while on the medication then ceasing to use will alleviate the effect. Patients who are hypersensitive to homeopathic preparations can possibly show response to a single dose which may not need to be repeated for some time. For this reason, therapy for these pets should always start with a single dose the previous day and should a major response be seen therapy should not be recom_menced until symptoms relapse and then only a single dose given for maximum effect. Although no evidence exists to the contrary, care should be taken with it's use in pregnant animals as low potency homeopathics are historically not regarded as totally safe in pregnancy, despite their lack of chemicals. VETERINARY NOTES ON INDICATIONS FOR USE OF COUGH COMPLEX
Its action is to reduce coughing and in many cases eliminate it altogether and as such aimed at symptomatic treatment Care should always be taken to ensure a correct diagnosis as this complex is capable of masking a cough whose origins are congestive heart failure or nematoduiasis
2. Kennel Cough (Tracheo Bronchitis): This complex is indicated in Keru-iel Cough (particularly the Parainfluenza form). Remedy has a calming effect aiding in relief.
3. Heart Cough: Effective in stopping the wet cough associated with chronic heart disease, should not be used without medication of the underlying heart disease.
4. Astlunatlclype Cough: This complex has been successful for asthmatic type coughs of unknown origin Resting the patient will aid in relief
5. Loss of Voice: The “Cough Remedy” can be used where a patient has a loss of bark or meow.
6. Hysteria Associated Coughing: When cats go to kennels/vets or are subject to stress associated with separation from the owner, can be used in combination with Homeopet’s “Anxiety Remedy.”
VETERINARY NOTES ON DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
The recommended dose of the cough complex used for coughs in dogs is 10 drops three times daily initially The frequency can be increased to one dose every 15 minutes where the cough is very severe or start with a frequent dosage and reduce it to I every thirty minutes, then I per hour, then I per every 2 hours and then to I three times daily. Alternatively the frequency can be matched to the coughing thus a dose is given every time the dog coughs. The dose is then gradually reduced as symptoms improve and continue to maintain improvement (reducing dosage too early can result in a reoccurrence of symptoms). The dose for chronic cough can be eventually as low as once daily.
In cats the dose can be as low as 2 drops three times daily. Due to the alcohol content some cats can salivate excessively following treatment this can be overcome by adding the drops to small amount of the patient’s food, water or milk In all cases the food or liquid should be left 10 to 20 minutes for the alcohol to dilute or evaporate. In cats the drops are best placed in the back of the oral cavity. In dogs the drops can be placed anywhere on the oral cavity. Some dogs will shake their head for a couple of moments after the first administration, but the occasional dog may object to the second administration in which case the same methods as for cats work
In pregnant animals caution would be advised as only homeopathics above 3Cc are regarded as totally safe.
Concurrent use of conventional therapies such as Anti-Inflammatories, Steroid Anti-Inflammatories, Analgesics and Cough Mixtures, e.g digphenhydamine hydrochloride (Benylin), have not to date show any adverse reactions. Where high doses of conventional therapy are the only way to control the condition, but have to be used at levels causing side effects
